Since 1981, the School has been introducing the participants to various vantage points and
aspects of the physics, chemistry and structure of biological and soft matter systems. The participants (mostly Ph.D. students) and lecturers come from comparably diverse scientific communities.
“WG2 Training School – Bio-Imaging using advanced microscopy methods”
23st – 27th April 2018, Center for Free-Electron Laser Science, Hamburg, Germany
This Bio-imaging training school will cover the state of the art in advanced microscopy methods. S
pecific methods that will be covered include; single particle Cryo-EM, Cryo-electron tomography, X-ray microscopy and tomography, super-resolution microscopy, Single molecule AFM and Light Sheet microscopy. We will cover sample preparation for the different methods and data processing and analysis tools (including the interfacing of high-resolution structural data into lower resolution tomograms and microscopy images). The training school will take the form of a series of lectures plus hands-on tutorials. The training school will also include short presentations by the attendees as well as a project troubleshooting session where the course attendees can present specific challenges in their own projects for advice from the trainers.
“WG3 Workshop – Emerging magnetic Resonance Techniques to study dynamic molecular machines”
14th – 16th April 2018, Convento da Arrábida, Setúbal, Portugal
This WG3 workshop will cover the state of the art in advanced magnetic resonance methods. Specific methods that will be covered include; Solid State NMR, in-cell NMR, STD-NMR, Paramagnetic NMR, DNP and EPR methodologies. The workshop will have a mixture of invited talks, ECI and PhD talks as well as various small group discussions. We will also cover a range of key molecular machines represented from the CM1306 Action, namely dynamic membrane transport proteins. The workshop will also include short presentations by the attendees as well as a project troubleshooting session where the course attendees can present specific challenges in their own projects for advice from the invited speakers.

3rd International Symposium
“Connecting EPR, ssNMR and DNP for the study of complex biomolecules“

We are co-organising this exciting symposium which builds on the two previous versions that have been held previously. The symposium will be of interest to all those using magnetic resonance to examine dynamic biological structures at the molecular level.
This is the third meeting co-organised by the COST Action following on from the successes of the first two meetings. At each event we have identified a new area associated with Working Group 3 and its interactions with workings groups 1,2, 4 and 5. On this occasion our aim is bring together about 60 key experts in the field of biological magnetic resonance aimed at catalysing discussions to bridge the methodologies of EPR, ssNMR, DNP, theoretical concepts and applications to understanding the mechanism of molecular machines. A combined discussion of the progress in these areas promises a high degree of synergies and has far-reaching consequences: The dramatic progress in 3D structure determination of difficult targets such as membrane proteins by crystallography and emerging methods such as XFEL and single-particle EM increase the structural biology knowledge base significantly. This results in a greatly increased demand for complementary spectroscopic methods to obtain mechanistic details and to probe conformational changes and molecular dynamics. Magnetic resonance plays a distinguished role in this process. While EPR allows probing large-scale domain movements (DEER), solid-state NMR provides short-range data at atomic resolution. Both methods benefit from stable radicals (labelling in EPR; PRE and DNP in NMR). Often, data sets from both methods are available for the same protein trapped in different catalytic states and need to be merged with crystallographic data. Furthermore, both methods benefit from progress in spin dynamics simulations. In addition, advanced novel methods are often implemented on simple model compounds (e.g. microcrystalline soluble proteins in ssNMR) but need to be transferred to biologically relevant, more complex systems, which requires careful validation and optimisation. Workshop on protein function triggering for time-resolved structural studies
9th-11th October 2016
This workshop will focus on strategies for protein function initiation for time-resolved structural studies. Lectures on the current available methods for photocaging and rapid mixing approaches will be offered by COST members, as well as overviews on the current experimental set-ups available.
These will be followed by a “speed-dating” event to match participants with complementary scientific disciplines in order to establish work groups able to perform these cutting-edge experiments. The workshop will provide a unique environment for brainstorming and the opportunity to write collaborative beamtime and grant proposals aimed at the coming autumn calls.

The workshop was organized over a period of three days, starting with presentations from professionals which covered the major aspects of time-resolved methodologies and experiment planning, thus highlighting the use of techniques which are currently at the forefront of protein research. This was followed by contributions from the participants, where each one had an adequate amount of time to present his/her system and address any questions that would like to be answered. Each presentation was followed by brainstorming sessions which focused on experiments and/or techniques which could be useful to solve the presented questions. Moreover, beam-time proposals and collaborative projects were also established during these sessions, thus meeting one of the main aims of these workshops, that of providing cooperation opportunities for young researchers.
The organization team was very professional, efficient as well as keeping the workshop running smoothly and on schedule. There was an active participation from all members of the workshop, which was equally balanced with both male and female participants. The participation countries for this workshop included; France, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Hungary, Germany, Malta, Portugal and Turkey.
For a student’s perspective, such workshops provide an excellent learning platform and an opportunity for the sharing of expertise and exchange of ideas, with professionals and other young researchers from different countries, irrespective of age, gender or location. This is especially significant for researchers from inclusiveness target countries, such as Malta, Portugal and Turkey, which are able to voice their scientific ideas and increase their participation on an international level.
13th Greta Pifat Mrzljak International School on Biophysics

This event took place as a school jointly organised by the Croatian Biophysical Society, EBSA and three COST Actions. The novel approach was a huge success and we even had a visit from the Croatian President Mrs. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.
Since 1981, this School has been introducing the participants to various vantage points and aspects of the physics, chemistry and structure of biological and soft matter systems. The participants (mostly Ph.D. students) and lecturers came from comparably diverse scientific communities.
The 2016 School features a novel, itinerant concept in order to provide an intense experience, both for students and lecturers. The School starts at the new campus of University of Split with hands-on training in several experimental and computational biophysical techniques. From there on the School continues as an Adriatic island hopping cruise, towards University of Zadar. A comprehensive set of lectures in biophysics will be held throughout the cruise at different island-based venues.

Hybrid approaches to describe molecular machines: An introduction to molecular modelling for experimentalists

Visualization, modelling, simulations, prediction: Computational methods continue to increase their impact on classical experiment-based research. Mastering of the methodology and successful integration of computational workflows into ongoing research is often hindered by challenges that comprise methods and computer programs as well as the complexity of the underlying concepts.The scope of this training school is to build bridges, to lower the steep learning curve and to open the doors to the computational world. The workshop is targeted at students, ECI’s, postdocs and experienced researchers equally. During the school, the experimentalist will be provided with a knowledge-package allowing them to understand in silico work and more importantly, to become familiar and therefore be able to include computational workflows into their own experimental design. The school will consist of lectures that focus on the theoretical aspects as well as essential hands-on training sessions.

79th Harden Conference

We are co-organising a session in this very exciting conference on modern spectroscopic techniques applied to study the process of Oxygen Evolution and Reduction in biology. The Harden series of conferences is one of Europe’s most prestigious conference series organised by the (UK) Biochemical Society. The meeting will therefore be of interest to all those using both structural and spectroscopic methods to resolve functional dynamics in these key molecular machines.

We are co-organising this exciting workshop on protein dynamics, held in the French Alps.The workshop is a forum for presenting, teaching and discussing results from the application of state-of-the-art experimental (including, but not limited to, optical spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, THz, spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, XFELs, electron microscopy, AFM and scattering methods), and theoretical and computational approaches to studying protein dynamics.
The meeting will be held at the Ecole de Physique des Houches. The site, which has been in operation at its present location in the shadow of the French Alps since 1951, has a long tradition of hosting relatively small (< 100 attendees), focused workshops and schools in a secluded setting that stimulates intense discussion during formal presentations and promotes fruitful, informal interactions between all participants, including senior investigators, young investigators, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.

2nd International Discussion Meeting on Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in the Life Sciences: FRET 2

We are co-organising this exciting International Discussion Meeting, held in Göttingen, Germany. During his time (1947 – 1951) in Göttingen Förster published his pioneering work on the theoretical treatment of radiationless energy transfer between excited molecules in Annalen der Physik (6. Folge. Band 2. 1948, 55-75).
We are calling the symposium a “Discussion Meeting” because we wish to promote lively discussions during the sessions and throughout the meeting where non-speakers will also present posters on their latest experimental results, ideas, or theories related to FRET. The sessions of this conference will deal with the following topics: History of FRET, FRET and molecular machines, Single-molecule FRET, FRET biophysics and theory of FRET, FRET Imaging I+II, FRET in structure analysis, New probes/ new methods for analysis and modelling of FRET, Hybrid FRET modelling and combination with other spectroscopies (MD, NMR, SAXS, EPR). Furthermore we will have three parallel evening work groups for the following topics: (1) Standards in FRET and standard measurement protocols, (2) Probe and Biosensor Development, (3) Nanoparticles and FRET. Moreover there are excellent opportunities to meet representatives of various companies to discuss the latest reagents and equipment for FRET experiments under in vitro conditions and in live cells.
The meeting will be held at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (MPIBPC), Am Fassberg 11, 37077 Göttingen, Germany.

9th International Workshop on X-ray Radiation Damage to Biological Crystalline Samples
We are co-organising this exciting workshop on radiation damage to biological molecules during diffraction and scattering experiments. This series of workshops was originally concerned with the effects of radiation damage during investigation of protein structures by X-ray crystallography. Other techniques of structural biology are now being included to ensure greater information exchange. The workshop will therefore be of interest to all those using ionising radiation to examine biological structures at the molecular level.
The meeting will be held in Lund, Sweden near the new synchrotron source MAX IV.

10th European Biophysics Congress
18-22nd July 2015, Dresden, Germany
We co-hosted a symposium session at this meeting with COST Action CM1207. This let us field a line-up of 6 great speakers, with our Action represented by Matteo Levantino (WG1), Elspeth Garman (WG1) and Dagmar Klostermeier (WG3). Matteo presented his latest results using X-FELs to study the protein-quake that ripples through myoglobin when a bound CO is dissociated. Elspeth talked about a technique called µPIXE and how this can help you unambiguously identify the metals in your purified protein. Dagmar presented her work using single molecule FRET to follow large motions inside protein molecular machines in order to help understand their function. 13-19th July 2015, Lisbon, Portugal
This workshop, again co-organised by WG3, took place for the 2nd time in the summer of 2015 in Lisbon. The course aims to gives hands-on experience of using a range of core structural biology methodologies, including X-ray crystallography, NMR, EPR, microarrays, ITC and Molecular Modelling. 2nd-6th Feb 2015, Bahrenfeld, Hamburg
This was the first of our purely COST Action organised training workshops. Hosted by WG1 it included lectures on the use of modern biophysical techniques to probe structure & dynamics as well as visits to some of the exciting new photon and electron sources available for time-resolved measurements on the Bahrenfeld Research Campus, including the currently under construction EU-XFEL. Lectures were delivered by WG1, WG2, WG3 and WG4 members as well as local experts. In addition, students worked in groups to practice writing beamtime proposals for access to large international facilities, such as those at Bahrenfeld. 6-12th October 2014, Lisbon, Portugal
This training school, co-organised by WG3 , aimed to illustrate to students the added value of a structural biology approach to the study of protein-ligand interactions by combining four core methodologies, X-ray Crystallography, NMR, Carbohydrate Microarrays and ITC, giving emphasis to their limitations and complementarities. The course included hands-on practicals as well as lectures. You can find more details here.
10-13th December 2014, Schloss Ringberg, Kreuth, Germany
This exciting meeting, co-organised by the COST Action, aimed to bring together researchers from our WGs 3 and 4, but also attracted members of WGs 1, 2 and 5. Set in the beautiful surrounds of Schloss Ringberg we heard about the latest developements in spectroscopic methods, as well as in theoretical tools used to help understand the experimental data. Also at this meeting participants engaged in a discussion sessions aimed towards standardisation of data reporting and formats. You can read more about the meeting here.
27th September-6th October 2014, Primošten, Croatia
The international School of Biophysics, co-organised by our COST Action, covered topics from across the Action. These included Biomacromolecular complexes and assemblies (protein-RNA/DNA complexes, e.g., viruses, ribosomes; quaternary protein structures; DNA, proteins, polyelectrolytes). The lecturers described related problems and discussed methodological approaches to solutions. You can find more information here.
